History of 2250 Upper Nelligan Lane and Nuns Canyon:
These hills were planted in grapes for many years before prohibition. The hills were preferred since they were less prone to frost damage than the Valley floor. Many vineyards in the area were abandoned during Prohibition and serious replanting began in the 70’s. Cattle also grazed in Nuns Canyon for many years.
This property was last sold in 1982 and the structure was built in 1983/4 as a home (upper floor) and boutique commercial winery (cellar and office area). The home/winery was built by Dick and JoAnn Puttbach. Dick was an engineer, and he personally oversaw every phase of the construction. Dick aspired to make premium wines, using his engineering skills to do so. They created Sugarloaf Ridge Winery and made a variety of wines using fruit from area vineyards. The greatest success came for their Cabernet Sauvignons, with the 1986 and 1987 vintages achieving strong critical acclaim. The intention was to plant 20-30 acres of grapes on this property to cultivate their own fruit, but that never happened.
Sadly, Dick was diagnosed with cancer, and died shortly thereafter – just as their wines were becoming very successful. The winery was decommissioned by his wife JoAnn who remarried and gave birth to a daughter – shifting her focus from wine making to family. In 1995 a significant addition was made to the home, extending the original rectangle southwards and adding the current Master Suite (and also finishing some fraction of the downstairs space). In 2007 a major kitchen remodel was completed. In 2017 all windows in the Solarium were replaced. In all of these cases, the jobs were done with permits and county inspection was completed.
In the 70’s and 80’s most of the smaller parcels were occupied by free thinking folks with modest incomes. Over the subsequent decades Nelligan Road has attracted some very accomplished individuals, including: a founder of Starbucks, a Stanford Medical School Professor, a major hedge fund manager and former ambassador, a highly-successful Hong Kong attorney, a leading venture capital executive, and a prominent Sonoma physician.
